Why Multi-Factor Authentication is Essential for Your Legal Practice

Smarter Drafter will require Multi-Factor Authentication from Wednesday 26th of June.

In today's digital landscape, cyber threats are more prevalent than ever. Law firms, entrusted with highly sensitive client information, are prime targets for cyber attacks. Implementing robust security measures is no longer optional—it's imperative. This is why Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) is coming to Smarter Drafter on Wednesday 26th of June.

The Rising Threat Landscape

According to the Australian Government's initiative, Act Now Stay Secure (here), Australians face an unprecedented level of vulnerability to cyber attacks. The nature of these attacks is becoming increasingly sophisticated, targeting both individuals and businesses with the intent to steal data, disrupt operations, and compromise confidential information.

The Government's Stance on Cyber Security

The Australian Government emphasises three critical steps to enhance online security:

  1. Set up Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA): Adding an extra layer of security to your online accounts.
  2. Install Software Updates Regularly: Keeping your devices secure with the latest protections.
  3. Create Strong and Unique Passphrases: Using over 14 characters and four or more random words for better security.

At Smarter Drafter, we have already implemented robust measures to cover points 2 and 3 through regular updates and support for complex passwords. Now, we are focusing on the crucial first step: Multi-Factor Authentication.

Why MFA is a Must-Have for Law Firms

  1. Enhanced Security: MFA significantly reduces the risk of unauthorised access. By requiring multiple forms of verification, it becomes much harder for cybercriminals to breach your accounts.
  2. Protection of Sensitive Data: Law firms handle vast amounts of confidential client information. MFA adds an essential layer of protection, ensuring that this data remains secure.
  3. Compliance and Trust: With growing regulatory requirements around data protection, implementing MFA helps law firms stay compliant with legal standards and build trust with clients.
  4. Mitigating Human Error: Passwords can be compromised through phishing attacks or simple human error. MFA compensates for these vulnerabilities by adding an additional barrier to entry.

What you will need to do from 26 June

From Wednesday 26th of June, all Smarter Drafter users will need to secure their account with Multi-Factor Authentication. This will mean on the 26th of June you will be asked to add a mobile phone number to your account. From that period on when logging into Smarter Drafter, you will be sent an SMS message with a unique, one-time code, that you will need to enter to access Smarter Drafter.

We are providing early notice for the release of Multi-Factor Authentication, as from Wednesday 26th of June you will not be able to log into Smarter Drafter without a phone number being added to your account.

The process for adding your phone number to an account is easy and will only take a minute to complete. We have created the video below so you know what to expect.
